One of the many fascinating places to visit in Abu Dhabi is the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve - a beautiful sanctuary of wildlife including a myriad of plant, aquatic and bird life. Less than 25 miles from Abu Dhabi, this unique nature reserve was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Once a coastal salt flat (sabkha), it has now flourished into natural and man-made lakes that enable many of Abu Dhabi's species to thrive. In 2018, the reserve was placed on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas making it the first site in the region to receive this recognition.
This Abu Dhabi tourist attraction is particularly known for its large population of Greater Flamingos – with as many as 4,000 living there during autumn and spring – but also hosts more than 250 species of birds, 37 plant species and a wide range of aquatic life. There are two self-guided walking trails (1.5 kms or 3 kms) for visitors to explore and a bird-watching hide to observe the flamingos.
The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is one of the wonderful Abu Dhabi attractions for families and children to connect with nature. It's indeed rare to see such large numbers of flamingos, making this a particularly exciting trip for children.
The nature filled attraction is highly recommended when you visit UAE for a family holiday. And if you’re here on a Dubai vacation, you can easily combine your Dubai trip with Al Wathba as it is less than a two hour drive from the major Dubai tourist attractions.
Tip: Make sure to be camera ready as your UAE trip will be filled with beautiful memories of Abu Dhabi!
The wetland reserve is kept as raw as possible and there are no cafes available – make sure you stay hydrated! Don’t forget to pack water, a hat and sunscreen.
