When you visit UAE, we suggest you begin with Abu Dhabi’s oldest landmark – Qasr Al Hosn.

Qasr Al Hosn is one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi. It is the oldest and most significant building in Abu Dhabi history that was built around the 1790s. The commanding watchtower overlooked the coastal trade routes and protected the growing settlement established on the island.

Over the centuries, Qasr Al Hosn has been home to the ruling family, acted as the seat of government, housed the National Consultative Council (founded by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE), and is a national archive. One of the most significant historical monuments and one of the top Abu Dhabi attractions, Qasr Al Hosn stands as the nation's living memorial and a narrator of Abu Dhabi history.

Built around the 1790s, Qasr Al Hosn comprises two major iconic buildings: the Inner Fort (originally constructed in 1795) and the Outer Palace (1939-45).

With Abu Dhabi tourism being known for its rich culture and spectacular museums, it is interesting to note that Qasr Al Hosn was transformed into a museum in 2018 following over a decade of intensive conservation and restoration work.

Today, the beautiful Qasr Al Hosn site, which has seen immaculate renovations, is a wonderful place to soak up the fascinating history of the UAE capital. Children, too, will love exploring its beautiful structure and nooks and crannies.

So, we invite you to add a dash of history to your UAE visit and explore this national monument that encapsulates the development of Abu Dhabi from a settlement reliant on fishing and pearling in the 18th century, to a modern, global metropolis.

Many UAE tour packages will include a visit to the famous Qasr Al Hosn but you can also drive to Abu Dhabi after your Dubai trip or Dubai vacation since the landmark is less than two hours from most major Dubai tourist attractions.
Tip: carry your camera and a spirit of exploration when you visit Abu Dhabi and its various Abu Dhabi attractions.
