The Abu Dhabi Emirate has one of the most unique and diverse natural geographies in the world, including everything from majestic mountains to rocky wadis and nature reserves that bring life to our surroundings.
One of the many fascinating places to visit in Abu Dhabi is the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve – a beautiful sanctuary of wildlife including myriad plant, aquatic and bird life. Less than 40kms from Abu Dhabi, this unique nature reserve was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Once a coastal salt flat (sabkha), it has now flourished into natural and man-made lakes that enable many of Abu Dhabi's species to thrive. In 2018, the reserve was placed on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, making it the first site in the region to receive this recognition.
This Abu Dhabi tourist attraction is particularly known as a ‘Flamingo Paradise’ – with as many as 4,000 living there during autumn and spring – but also hosts more than 250 species of birds, 37 plant species and a wide range of aquatic life. There are two self-guided walking trails (1.5kms or 3kms) for visitors to explore and a bird-watching hide to observe the flamingos.
If you are looking for a choice of Abu Dhabi attractions to visit with your family, then the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a great spot for families and children to connect with nature. This will be a particularly exciting trip for children as it is indeed rare to see such large numbers of flamingos.
The nature-filled attraction is highly recommended when you visit UAE for a relaxed family holiday. And if you’re here on a Dubai vacation, you can easily combine your Dubai trip with Al Wathba as it is less than a two-hour drive from major Dubai tourist attractions.
Visitors with families, make a note that the wetland reserve is kept as raw as possible and there are no cafes available, so stay hydrated! Water, hats and sunscreen must be carried with you.
And don’t forget your cameras to capture memorable moments of your UAE trip!
